Work on design of metro rail, three extra bridges starts soon

Detailed design of the long-waited metro rail project and second Katchpur, second Meghna and second Meghna-Gumti bridge project will start soon as selection of general consultants for the two mega projects has been completed. Officials said two Japanese firms will carry out the detailed design, construction supervision work of Tk 220 billion Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project and Tk 84.87 billion second bridges' construction project as the technical committees have recommended. The Japan International Cooperation Agency has also given its concurrence for both the projects. The officials said the signing ceremony with the Japanese company Oriental will be held on Sunday for the second Katchpur, second Meghna and second Meghna-Gumti bridge project and Nippon Koei Co Ltd for the MRT line-6 (metro rail) project on Monday. The Roads and Highways Department (RHD) is implementing the second Katchpur, second Meghna and second Meghna-Gumti bridge project to construct the alternate four-lane bridges beside the existing three bridges for making those fit for the Dhaka-Chittagong four-lane highway. The JICA has been providing technical and financial support to the Tk 84.87 billion project. The Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA), responsible to carry out the preliminary work of the Mass Rapid Transit project, will sign the loan agreement with the general consultant. Both the projects were recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the government claimed significant progress of the projects during the Awami League government's tenure.
